Prospect Watch: The Chihuahuas opened their series in Round Rock by tallying 13 hits en route to a victory. … Trenton Brooks continued his hot streak with two more hits and an RBI. Brooks is 10-for-17 with three doubles and four homers over his last four games, and is hitting .433/.526/1.033 in June as he works to put himself in the conversation for a big league roster spot. … Yonathan Perlaza singled three times and stole his sixth base Tuesday. Perlaza struggled mightily in May but has looked much better at the plate in June. The Chihuahuas outfielder has hit safely in six straight games, although he also struck out at least once in every game during his hitting streak. … Matt Waldron earned his second win, pitching five solid innings as he makes his way back to being a potential option for the Padres’ starting rotation. The knuckleballer allowed two runs on four hits, walking three and striking out four. Perhaps more importantly, Waldron stretched out to 87 pitches, throwing the knuckler 48 times. After starting the year on the IL, the righty was optioned to El Paso at the beginning of June and is likely the next man up if the Padres need another starter. … After going nine days between his last two appearances, Bryan Hoeing came back after two days rest as he continued his rehab assignment, but the righty struggled with command. Hoeing threw 21 pitches – 10 for strikes – as he retired only one batter. He has struggled with results during his prolonged rehab assignment, which has hit 30 days, Unless the Padres have received special permission to extend the assignment, he will need to be activated by the big league club or be optioned to the minors to continue his path to the Padres’ bullpen.
Roster Moves: There was a lot of movement on the Padres’ farm system on Tuesday. The Chihuahuas essentially made a line change in their bullpen, receiving right-handers Eduarniel Nuñez, Carter Loewen, and Jose Espada from the Missions. In corresponding transactions, lefty Jason Blanchard was placed on the development list and righty Ethan Routzahn was sent back to San Antonio.

Prospect Watch: The Missions had plenty of opportunities on Tuesday but they went 0-for-16 with runners in scoring position, losing to the Sod Poodles in Amarillo. … It’s safe to say that Missions shortstop Francisco Acuña likes hitting at Hodgetown, where he hit four home runs in a six-game series back in April. He didn’t homer Tuesday night, but he did reach base in all five of his plate appearances. Acuña had four singles, drew a walk, and notched his 11th steal of the season. Thanks to his prowess in the Panhandle, Acuña has a fantastic .872 OPS on the road this season, compared to the .722 mark he’s posted at Wolff Stadium. Overall, the 26-year-old former Pirate farmhand is in the midst of his finest professional season. Through 46 games, Acuña has a wRC+ of 123. … Devin Ortiz singled and drew a pair of walks and stole his ninth bag of the season. The 26-year-old doesn’t possess much power but he’s contributed an above-average .719 OPS for the Missions in 2025. … One of the keys to pitching in Amarillo is to keep the ball out of the air; Jagger Haynes was successful in that endeavor Tuesday. The young lefty struggled a bit with command – walking four – but he recorded eight ground ball outs including two double plays to mitigate the damage. While it wasn’t necessarily pretty, Haynes tossed five shutout innings in one of the more difficult pitching environments in the minor leagues. In 12 starts this season, the North Carolina native has a 3.83 ERA.
Roster Moves: As we reported yesterday, outfielder Joshua Mears was placed on the reserve/retired list, ending a career that showed plenty of promise but was marred by his struggles to make consistent contact. System veteran Ripken Reyes moved down from El Paso to provide outfield depth. He started in right field for the Missions. Right-hander Tyson Neighbors was promoted from Fort Wayne after totally dominating the Midwest League. The Padres’ fourth-round selection last year posted a 1.19 ERA while striking out 43.8% of High-A batters.

Prospect Watch: The TinCaps returned home after two weeks on the road and lost their series opener to the last place Cubs. Fort Wayne led going into the ninth inning but the Cubs scored three runs to earn the comeback victory. … Leo De Vries connected on his first homer since April 29 and fifth overall on the year. The switch-hitting shortstop also singled and drew a walk and was one of seven batters hit by a pitch in this contest. The talented shortstop struggled in May, slugging just .280, but has looked better in June, hitting .231/.394/.423. … Jack Costello had a pair of singles and he connected on his fifth homer of the season. After struggling through the first two months, the former USD star has come alive in six June games. The 24-year-old is hitting .360/.380/.640 with two homers this month, to boost his overall OPS through 47 games for the TinCaps to .656. … Ian Koenig struggled in Tuesday’s start but ultimately did not factor in the decision. The righty pitched 4.1 innings, allowing six runs (three earned). He struck out five, but walked two and hit three batters. The 24-year-old has looked good at times this season but his overall 6.08 ERA leaves something to be desired. … Lefty Harry Gustin pitched a pair of scoreless innings, walking one and striking out two. The 23-year-old has thrived as a multi-inning reliever over the last two seasons. In 14 outings this season, the 2023 18th-rounder has tossed 37.1 innings while holding opposing hitters to a paltry .200 average. Tuesday’s scoreless outing lowered his ERA to 1.93.

Prospect Watch: The Storm fell behind early and lost their fourth straight, dropping their record to 27-31. … Kaden Hollow had a pair of doubles and drove two runs in the loss. The 24-year-old made a brief, five-game appearance for the TinCaps in the middle of May but has otherwise been a steady contributor for the Storm. Hollow doesn’t possess much power but he’s walked (28 times) more than he’s struck out (24). The former Utah Tech star is hitting .278/.382/.367 for Lake Elsinore this season. … Righty Will Varmette has very much been feast or famine this season for the Storm; Unfortunately, he struggled mightily on Tuesday. The Alabama native lasted just 1.1 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits, one and one walk while he struck out two. The poor outing inflated Varmette’s ERA to 6.32 but that doesn’t tell the story. He’s allowed one run or less in six of his 10 outings this year. In the other four, though, Varmette has allowed 21 earned runs in just 7.1 innings. Even after Tuesday’s clunker, he has a solid 1.15 WHIP and opposing batters are hitting just .180 against him. … After allowing earned runs for the first time as a professional Saturday, righty Adam Conrad got back to putting up zeroes Tuesday night. The 22-year-old pitched 3.2 innings and didn’t allow a hit. He walked one and struck out one. Overall, the North Carolina native has a 0.64 ERA in 28.1 innings for the Storm in 2025.
Roster Move: Left-hander Luis Gutierrez was promoted to Fort Wayne on Tuesday. Taking his place on the Storm Roster is right-hander Kannon Kemp. Gutierrez had allowed just four earned runs over his last 29 innings.

Prospect Watch: The ACL Padres managed just two hits, losing to the ACL Rockies in a seven-inning game that was played in a crisp hour and 29 minutes. … Middle infielders Luis De Leon and Yimy Tovar, both 19 years old, each singled in three plate appearances. De Leon, a diminutive switch-hitter, has hit in five straight while delivering a solid .314/.398/.395 line in 23 games. Tovar, who offers slightly more physical projection, has hit in nine straight and has his season OPS up to .765. … Righty Humberto Cruz blew through his first two innings of work, giving up just one single. But as the righty got hit hard as he stretched out to three innings for the first time. The 18-year-old was tagged for four runs on five hits in his final frame. The young righty will look to make it up to 60 pitches a few times before he gets ticketed for Lake Elsinore. … Veteran righty reliever J.B. Wendelken, who opened the season in El Paso before hitting the injured list in early April, pitched a scoreless inning in relief as he began a rehab assignment.
